Samsung Galaxy Spica out on Rogers for $80 on contract
Rogers users have a new option in the stable in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Spica. Unfortunately those that do hop on board will be commiserating with the Motorola Backflip crowd running Android 1.5 in an Android 2.1 world. As we reported last month, there is a leaked Android 2.1 ROM for this device floating around out there already, so you can probably anticipate being brought up-to-date real soon. However, I will caution you that “real soon” doesn’t always mean what you think it means . OS version concerns aside this device is a bit of a study in contrasts as it has some nice features while definitely falling short in other areas, but at only $80 it is hard to complain too much. It also benefits from its close proximity to the Backflip release as this thing shines by comparison (This one comes with Google Apps!). The processor weighs in at 800 Mhz, making it one of the faster (on paper anyway) Android devices on the market. The capacitive 3.2 inch screen at 320

New Kyocera Android phone to have DVR abilities thanks to Cox?
AndroidAndMe is reporting a new interesting rumor today, that cable company Cox is teaming up with phone maker Kyocera to bring a new Android phone to the market, one that will have TV/DVR capabilities. Says the article: "Worked on a quick short-term sub-sub-sub contract where I wrote an app for Android, to be run at a trade show. The hardware I installed on was a Kyocera, but even more interesting was the Cox logo on it. The logos were taped over but quite legible from the bumps nonetheless. There were also some Cox apps included; I think one was either for watching TV or controlling DVR ? Not entirely sure. The screen was WVGA800, very nice and sharp , though the hardware wasnt the fastest. Unfortunately I didnt have a chance to photograph or examine it too closely since I only had about an hour to load and debug." Cox Wireless is ready to hit three test markets in the next few weeks, and the Android device may be the first on the LTE network, which has seen peak speeds of 25Mpbs. Permalink | Comments

HTC Incredible Pictures Reveal Red Buttons, Delayed Until May?
Verizon Wireless fans are eagerly awaiting many upcoming Android devices including the Nexus One and HTC Incredible. If you’re awaiting word on both, the 55+ page “ Official HTC Incredible Thread ” is starting to reveal a LOT of goodies. First of all, remember that nasty Nexus One multi-touch mixup we told you about yesterday? Verizon is always stringent on their testing and the current rumor (stress: rumor) is that Big Red is delaying the Nexus One until the end of this month or later to try and fix the problem. Here is where it gets really interesting. The upcoming HTC Incredibly is rumored to have the exact same screen that is in the Nexus One and HTC Desire – the screen causing the problems. While we’ve heard “March 23rd” thrown around before, the month of May is also being given some lip service . This rumor is given a bit of support based on the fact that its source also posted three pictures of the HTC Incredible in red-buttoned glory: Gorgeous. And I’m sure this will be a dividing factor but I’m loving that red. Notice at the VERY TOP of that picture the red peice above the phone? Does the Incredible also have a red back cover? Side by side with the G1 – you can see the optical trackpad as well. Stay glued to that thread on AF and of course Phandroid as we bring you the latest developments with the HTC Incredible! [Thanks Ruben, woop, GregGDS and everyone else who contributed/tipped this!]

Cricket ready to leap on Android phones
Leap Wireless just reported a wider-than-expected loss in the fourth quarter, but the company announced they will turn to smartphones to grow their subscribers and increase ARPU (average revenue per user). Among the new phones will be a BlackBerry device from Research In Motion as well as a smartphone running Google’s Android platform. The telecommunications company offers wireless service through its subsidiary Cricket Wireless and just announced a joint venture with South Texas based Pocket Communications . Both carriers offer unlimited talk plans starting around $25 and have unlimited talk plus web starting at $40-45. This is not the first time a regional carrier has offered Android phones (see Cellular South ), but Leap would definitely be the largest. Leap currently offers service across parts of 34 states and has close to 5 million subscribers. They also recently purchased some AWS spectrum that gives them coverage of an estimated 110 million potential customers. It will be interesting to see how the wireless industry shakes down in 2010. Rumors are flying like crazy about a potential merger between Leap and Metro PCS, their rival. Metro PCS had a failed effort to acquire Leap in 2007 and they are gearing up for another try. There is also talk that T-Mobile USA Inc. could be looking to buy MetroPCS or Leap. Regardless of who comes out on top, customers should have access to cheaper data plans for Android phones later this year. Some of these carriers might not have the fastest 3G networks, but a $40-45 unlimited everything plan is mighty tempting.
