You Did It! Motorola Gadget Wins Gadget, Smartphone & GPS Of The Year [ENGADGET AWARDS]

Earlier this month the iPhone 3GS was devouring the Motorola Droid for both Gadget of the Year and Smartphone of the Year in the Engadget Awards. We asked for your help to rally the troops and it looks like it paid off : the Motorola Droid has won the Gadget of the Year, Smartphone of the Year and GPS Device of the Year in the Reader’s Choice Awards. And oh yeah, Engadget Editors selected the Droid as Gadget of the Year and GPS Device of the Year. Even though the iPhone 3GS took the Editors’ “Smartphone of the Year” the iPhone is obviously a gadget too, and since the Droid won the overall gadget award, they probably just wanted to spread the love. There are a million different “awards” events, shows and contests when it comes to end of the year results, but there is no doubt that Engadget is one of the biggest and most influential tech sites on the planet; what they say matters. And it isn’t just their editors – with outrageous readership numbers, the “Reader’s Choice Awards” are equally important in terms of taking a cross-section of the tech-loving public. Take into account their history of rampant iPhone fanboys/commenters and I think you could say the gadget/smartphone tide is turning. CONGRATS ANDROID LOVERS! Your platform is no longer STARTING to get the love and respect it deserves – it already has. Now onto bigger and better things like taking over the world. Muahahaha. By the way, I photoshopped that picture of Shaun White and his fellow medal placing American holding up the Droid just so I could somehow randomly fit in the need to tell you should watch his Half-Pipe performance if you haven’t yet seen it. You can see a bunch of the videos here .

He followed through, and detailed instructions of how to Do-It-Yourself and get the HTC Desire on your own Nexus One can be found at RedmondPie.com . Props to Paul “The Main Main” who has further details of the build at Modaco .

HTC Desire Running HTC Sense [VIDEO]

The most powerful Android Phone on the market and HTC Sense – a pretty killer combination – and the guys at GSMarena provide a quick 2-minute overview that is sure to leave you drooling: They show the optical joystick being used to scroll home screens which seems a little odd given the huge touchscreen above but I suppose an extra option can’t hurt. I’m liking the Helicopter View which would be awesome if you had maybe 10+ screens with full screen widgets. The FriendStream integration looks pretty good as well, it’ll be interesting to see how it compares to MOTOBLUR which some thought was information overload. I suppose it depends what type of Social Networking user you are. By the way… DANG Sense looks nice on that screen.

Google acquires reMail iPhone App

Google has recently acquired reMail from the AppStore and the removed it form the iPhones AppStore. Ha, take that Apple. One of the best apps for the iPhone could make its way to Android soon. Although this may end up being mashed together with the gmail app to enhance its functionality. Gabor Cselle, the founder, will join Google’s Gmail team in Mountain View as a product manager and has issuded the following statement: “You might be wondering what will happen with reMail’s product. Google and reMail have decided to discontinue reMail’s iPhone application, and we have removed it from the App Store. reMail is an application on your phone. If you already have reMail, it will continue to work. We’ll even provide support for you until the end of March, and we’ve enabled all paid reMail features for you: You can activate these by clicking “Restore Purchases” inside the app. reMail downloads email directly from your email provider to your phone, and your personal information, passwords, and email are never sent to or stored on our servers.” For those of you who are unfamiliar with this app, here is a video of it in action.
