Re: Memory Card?

No. People told me that 16gb is alot and that 32gb is too big. Hopefully they are right because I made the decision to just get 16 and not 32. I read that the only people that get 32 and need the space is people using their phones for work.

Best Free Android Widgets Part 2

In December I wrote the post “ My Favorite Free Android Widgets ” and since then that post averages about 17,000 views per month. With that kind of popularity I thought we deserve an update. There are still several of those same apps & widgets on my phone today but I have found new and better widgets! I use a Travel app called Flight Stats to keep track of upcoming flights and other travel arrangements. Flight Stats is the very best at helping you organize your travel itineraries including hotels, rental cars, and flights. The widget displays your upcoming flights along with times and statuses. You can update or refresh the widget at any time by touching the refresh button in the top right of the 2

Froyo Technically Possible on the G1, Still Not Likely to Receive Official Update

At this point, I’d be surprised if anyone still thought that the ‘Godfather’ of Android devices – The T-Mobile G1 – had enough juice left in them to make Google want to aim their latest and greatest at it. While the Android team wishes the G1 could still keep up with the Joneses, they’ve formally stated that Froyo would never be officially adapted for the phone. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost, however, as the Android team has also assured us that – thanks to the unaffiliated development scene – the G1 is still technically capable of running Android 2.2. Those who root their phones have probably become familiar with the Danger SPL: it’s a custom SPL that repartitions the phone’s flash memory so you’ll have more space to install bigger operating systems. The biggest problem with Froyo on the G1 seems to be the space, though, as the Android team told Android Police at the Fireside Chat that Froyo was built with the slower processors in mind (as we saw Google allude to when they announced that the JIT compiler would be implemented for Dalvik at Google I/O). Google’s stated that if you do want Froyo, then you’ll need to be looking at developers like Cyanogen to cook up a solution for your antiquated (but still very capable) hardware. Whether or not Cyanogen takes up the challenge remains to be seen, but I think you owe it to yourself to start thinking about buying a new phone, at this point.

Jobs Takes A Few Pot Shots At Google, Rubs Salt Into The Wound With ‘iAds’

Today during Apple’s iPhone 4.0 developer preview, Steve Jobs announced a number of new innovations for its mobile platform. OS 4 will bring multitasking and folders to the iPhone, iBooks will come to the device, and Apple officially announced its venture into mobile advertising iAds. Plus, the latest number of iPads sold and app downloads was announced. And interestingly, Jobs made time to throw a few jabs at Google. In regards to multitasking, Jobs said “In multitasking, if you see a task manager, they blew it. Users shouldn’t have to ever, ever, ever think about that stuff.” This is a direct hit at Google’s Android system. While a task manager isn’t 100 percent necessary on Android phones, many people download and use it to manage multiple apps running on the device. In regard to mobile search Jobs said, “On a mobile device, search is not where it’s at, not like on the desktop. They’re spending all their time on these apps — they’re using apps to get to data on the internet, not generalized search.” Search is Google’s core competency, and search ads are Google’s bread and butter. Jobs is essentially saying that search is irrelevant on mobile devices, which seems to go against Google strategy with its Android platform. Jobs spoke about the unified inbox on the iPhone, saying that “Customers have really wanted this…we’ve made it so you can have more than one Exchange account, as well. If you want to focus on just one account, we’ve added fast inbox switching.” Note that jobs didn’t mention Gmail. Probably not a coincidence. In the question and answer portion of the presentation, Jobs said emphatically, “We do not have plans to be a worldwide ad agency. We don’t know a lot about advertising, but we’re learning. We tried to buy AdMob, but Google snatched them up because they didn’t want us to have them, so we bought another smaller company, Quattro. But we’re babes in the woods.” Although playing innocent, Jobs was clearly shedding light on Google’s motivations with purchasing AdMob (which honestly sounds like a fight between two toddlers over a toy-a very expensive toy). Jobs points out that Apple decided to buy a “smaller company” in contrast to Google’s $750 million acquisition of AdMob. The announcement of iAds comes at a time when there are reports that the FTC is planning to block the Google-AdMob deal, because of anti-trust issues. Google bought the biggest player in the mobile advertising space, and is now being intensely examined for it. And of course, Apple also coincidentally announced its innovative, foray into the mobile advertising world (which is a multi-billion dollar market), just as Google faces regulatory hurdles which may curtail their involvement in the space. Of course, Apple’s iAds could ends up being superior to the search ads Google has made a living off of. But Apple stepping in means that Google and AdMob officially have competition from one of the world’s largest technology companies in the mobile space, which could be good news for Google’s probable case against the FTC. 9 Ways to Geek Out Your T-Shirt Collection

A t-shirt isn’t just a cotton garment, it’s a form of communication, a personal billboard that lets you get a message out to the world in a medium that offers the minimum of effort. Whether your geek tendencies lean towards gaming, Apple, space, film or social media, we’ve got a sassy selection of tees that will have you reaching for the plastic before you can say “medium, in blue, please.” After all, why go plain-chested when you can be spreading the word of geek? Emblazon your chest pronto with a themed tee that says it all. Amazing Apple Tees Apple fans tend to lean towards the fanatic side of fandom, and as such provide a ripe market for t-shirt designers to exploit. Heck, there’ve been so many Apple-flavored tees over the years some bloke has written a book about it . These three designs offer a call for Jobs to be President (after all, he’s no slouch in the success department) from Insanely Great Tees , a New York-based Apple tee specialist, a photo-real Mac from Print Liberation’s “Great Moments of the 20th Century” series and a cunning mash-up from MightTees which mixes Jobs and a Mac with John Cusack’s boombox-wielding Lloyd Dobler. Cost: From left to right – $19, $18, $31.99 Magnificent Meme Tees Nod to classic, recent and current memes with this trio of tees that celebrates the wonder of LOL cats with ThinkGeek’s customizable “im in ur” tee complete with wash-off-able marker pen, the randomness of keyboard cat with an instantly recognizable line drawing from Nerdy Shirts , and make a super in-the-know reference to Chat Roulette with the “Nexted” design from WeSaySo over on Spreadshirt . Cost: From left to right – $19.99, $19.99, from $14.90 Fantastic Film Tees While what makes a “ geek film ” is wide open for discussion, geeky film-lovers will no doubt appreciate a tee that references a fave flick in a subtle, insider sort of way. Here then, are three examples of such a garment, with a t-shirt promoting the Lighthouse Lounge made by LastExitToNowhere (the absolute t-shirt authority on made-up companies from films – recommended for a browse), an Inigo Montoya name tag from ThinkGeek , and a colorful effort celebrating the league championship win of the Rollers from 80sTees . Can you name all the films? Cost: From left to right – approx $32, from $17.99, $20 Great Gaming Tees The world of video games lends itself to t-shirts very well indeed thanks to its graphical nature. No matter what kind of gamer you are, you can be sure there’s a tee out there for you. We’ve plucked three from the internets that made us smile. Tell those young whippersnappers that you’re “classically trained” with this dark blue design from 80sTees , see behind-the-scenes at the space invader training academy thanks to Threadless , while ShirtCity’s video game t-shirt shows the evolution of the game controller across multiple platforms. Cost: From left to right – $20, $18, $22,95 Rad Robot Tees Everyone loves robots but as we haven’t yet managed to get to the stage where we can have our own robo-buddy, we can at least have a few decorating our clothing. There’s more than a few — 51 in fact — decorating ChopShop’s WeRobot tee . As well as the 50-plus bots it boasts glow in the dark eyes for the robots drawn from film, TV, literature, video games and more. “Robots Can’t Smile” is a whimsical take on a robot-themed tee from Design By Human’s il_Mostro , while RedBubble’s robots are livening things up by doing the YMCA dance. Cost: From left to right – $20, $19, from $24.74 Marvelous Music Tees While we wouldn’t dream about treading on that oh-so-personal area that is music taste, as far as t-shirts go, what we can offer is a selection of fun music-themed shirts. First up is Five Crown’s melting guitar , familiar to anyone who has seen the recent iPod nano ads, although we’re certainly not making any kind of comment about which came first. This is followed by a classic blank cassette tee from Forever21 which should appeal to anyone old enough to remember the pleasure of possibility a blank tape used to present. We round off the three with another Five Crown’s design that sees vinyl getting the spotlight – perfect for anyone who still enjoys sticking a record on the turntable. Cost: From left to right – $26.99, $24.99, $14.90 Spiffy Space Tees Rather than go down the NASA tee route (we’re so over that) we’ve got three space-themed shirts for your consideration. First up is “A Flying Dog in Outer Space” from Threadless that see’s man’s best friend conquer the final frontier complete with helmet and doggie jet pack. We stay space exploration-related with the next t-shirt, an Etsy offering that depicts the Pioneer Plaque (familiar to space geeks everywhere), the pictorial guide to life on Earth stuck on Pioneer 10 and 11 in case they were intercepted by alien lifeforms. Last up is “Spacemen Rock,” another colorful effort from Threadless , which has four astronauts getting their groove on. Cost: From left to right – $18, $14, $20 Super Social Media Tees You’re well taken care of over on Zazzle for your Mashable t-shirts needs – where there are tons of designs to chose from that are customizable in enough ways to make your brain boggle. Next up, you can social bookmark yourself in the real world with this text-based effort from Nerdy Shirts . Finally, Twitter users get a “Follower” option from ShirtCity . Cost: From left to right – Varies, $19.97, $19.95 Groovy Google Tees What could be better than a t-shirt with the Android robot on it? How about the Android robot walking a dog? An official gProduct , its coolness is only eclipsed by our next g-themed option – the Sesame Street-themed doodles now available as tees from the Google Store . Big Bird is our fave, but there’s also Elmo and The Count options. While you’re asking yourself how your wardrobe has survived so long without Sesame Street/Google tees, take a look at our last option from CultClassicTs , which asks another question – what would Larry & Sergey do? (Answer: acquire it, shut it down, open in again in restricted beta and fail to integrate it in other Google products). Cost: From left to right – from $14.80, $20.10, $22.99 What geeky t-shirts are in your wardrobe? Let us know in the comments. On Google’s Impending China Decision, and How It Has Lost Its Impact

The Social Analyst is a weekly column by Mashable Co-Editor Ben Parr , where he digs into social media trends and how they are affecting companies in the space. Two months ago, Google threatened to shut down its China search engine over censorship . Yet until today, its China search engine has stayed up with results still censored. Now the search company is finally expected to announce that it’s going to actually follow through and slowly shut down its China search engine. So why does it feel like Google’s impending decision will not have the impact it could have had two months ago? When Google first made its declaration, the implications seemed enormous . One of the world’s largest technology companies was reigniting the censorship debate. Governments and activists would query China over the Google attacks and the state of free speech in its country, while Google would be taking the moral high ground as it walked away from one of the world’s largest markets due to principle. Instead, we’ve had a two month “will they or won’t they?” type of affair that even Google’s co-founder said could take a year or two to resolve . Now that the end game may be close , what will happen when Google actually pulls out of the world’s most populated nation? The answer, sadly, is not much. Google Is Trying to Have Its Cake And Eat It Too Ever since the company’s bold statement on censorship in China, it has kept quiet publicly. Privately however, the company has been in talks with the Chinese government over its operations in the Asian nation. Google’s attempts to run its search engine unfiltered though seem to have failed — not a big surprise for those of us who have been tracking the Chinese government’s Internet policies. Now the heart of the issue seems to be that Google doesn’t want to completely leave China, even if it does shut down its search engine. The company would like to keep operations in the country. The fallout from the Google-China dispute has already affected Android , which is something the company cannot afford to lose in such a budding market. Has Google’s resolve wavered? It’s tough to tell, but my guess would be no — it will stay true to its word and shut down the Google China search engine if it cannot serve unfiltered search results. What is happening though is this: it is trying to have the rest of its China pie while coming out looking like the good guys. Operations in advertising, mobile, and non-search fields would stay open, keeping Google’s foothold in China. At the same time, it could take its moral stand. A Rock and a Hard Place The problem though is that the message it wanted to send has already been lost. China has won. Its laws have not changed, the damage to China has been minimal at best, and it looks like it will get to keep one of the world’s most powerful technology companies within its borders. Google, on the other hand, has lost much of the shine from its original announcement, will soon give up a small but valuable piece of the Chinese search market, and has weakened its other initiatives in the communist nation. After Google was hacked, it was put in between a rock and a hard place. Its actions, while still bold, will not change how things are done in China. Its indecisiveness with how to proceed has made the pressure on China all but evaporate. Google’s going to finally make the stand it promised to make two months ago. It’s unfortunate that it allowed time to rust the shine of its declaration and take away much of the principle and authority that made the decision so powerful and inspiring.
