Customer greeted with malware on Vodafone-issued HTC Magic (good thing it’s discontinued)
Crapware's bad enough, but having your life torn asunder simply by plugging in that shiny new (insert USB-connected device here) is an exciting new trend -- viruses find their way into the darnedest places, don't they? It seems an employee at anti-malware firm Panda Research who'd ordered a new Magic off Vodafone UK's site was greeted with no fewer than three nefarious executables upon plugging the device into her PC: a bot client, a password stealer, and a Conficker variant, and running a network sniffer quickly confirmed that the virii were live and ready to do harm as soon as the autorun in the Magic's mounted mass storage was executed on her Windows machine. If this were a widespread issue, we'd certainly have heard about it in other places, so odds are good (as Panda points out) that this was simply a case of HTC or Vodafone doing an awful job of wiping a refurbished set -- but it gives you pause and kind of makes you wish you worked for an anti-malware firm, at least on days when you're plugging in a new phone for the first time. The silver lining, we suppose, is that Vodafone has recently discontinued the Magic, though that creates another problem: the only Android device it currently stocks now is the lowly Tattoo , so the X10 and Nexus One can't come soon enough. Cricket ready to leap on Android phones
Leap Wireless just reported a wider-than-expected loss in the fourth quarter, but the company announced they will turn to smartphones to grow their subscribers and increase ARPU (average revenue per user). Among the new phones will be a BlackBerry device from Research In Motion as well as a smartphone running Google’s Android platform. The telecommunications company offers wireless service through its subsidiary Cricket Wireless and just announced a joint venture with South Texas based Pocket Communications . Both carriers offer unlimited talk plans starting around $25 and have unlimited talk plus web starting at $40-45. This is not the first time a regional carrier has offered Android phones (see Cellular South ), but Leap would definitely be the largest. Leap currently offers service across parts of 34 states and has close to 5 million subscribers. They also recently purchased some AWS spectrum that gives them coverage of an estimated 110 million potential customers. It will be interesting to see how the wireless industry shakes down in 2010. Rumors are flying like crazy about a potential merger between Leap and Metro PCS, their rival. Metro PCS had a failed effort to acquire Leap in 2007 and they are gearing up for another try. There is also talk that T-Mobile USA Inc. could be looking to buy MetroPCS or Leap. Regardless of who comes out on top, customers should have access to cheaper data plans for Android phones later this year. Some of these carriers might not have the fastest 3G networks, but a $40-45 unlimited everything plan is mighty tempting. Distimo Study Reveals A Great Deal About The Android Market
Distimo, a Dutch app store analytics firm, has finally completed their research on the six major mobile app stores: iTunes App Store, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Their findings analyzed store size, store growth, most popular applications, and where you can find the best deal. The good news for Android users, is that Distimo has determined that Android has the highest percentage of free apps (57%) and has an average of 3,005 new apps written each month. Relative to the number of apps, Android actually has the fastest growing app store of all of them! Interestingly, in terms of the average price of paid apps, Android, Apple, Nokia, and Palm were all in the same range, while RIM and Microsoft were twice as high. This is good news for Android fans! Let us hope the market continues to grow and apps stay at a reasonable price. Source: Distimo Might We Suggest... Conspiracy Theory: Is Apple Orchestrating a Media Attack on Google? Review- Verizon Shell/Holster For Motorola Droid
(image courtesy Verizon Wireless ) I hate cases for my phones. I tend to forget this however and buy them anyway. In 10+ years of owning cell phones, I think I’ve used one case for more than a few weeks (an Agent 18 ecoShield for the original iPhone). At the same time, I really love my Moto Droid and thought it would be prudent to have a case for it…so I did my research and discovered there were very few exciting options out there. A few Verizon branded cases did catch my eye and after a field trip to my local store I picked up the shell/holster combo. Is it a keeper? Will it survive my low case attention span? All 5 Major UK Networks To Offer the HTC Desire
I have a feeling the HTC Desire is gong to be big in the UK – We recently spread the word UK networks Orange and T-mobile will be stocking the Android 2.1 based phones and now I’m pleased to tell you O2 , Vodafone and 3 have joined the ranks offering it too! This means all 5 ‘major’ UK networks will be carrying it - what a choice to have…….. Of course , if you don’t want to be tied down to a contract you can always purchase it sim-free and unlocked from eXpansys . Some networks haven’t given exact dates yet but what we do know so far is that T-mobile is expected to be the first with an planned release date of March 26th with Network 3 dishing theirs around “spring time” . We can expect to see the HTC Desire with Orange and Vodafone around April & O2 is yet to give an date. In case you don’t know the HTC Desire was codenamed as the HTC Bravo and is essentially the Nexus One but features HTC’s Sense UI and an distinct optical track pad for navigation. Did we mention that some are customised? – According to Network 3 their HTC Desire packs in Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Email on 3 and Twitter as well as an Facebook app. We also know the Vodafone version has their own Vodafone 360 apps on their- which are currently available on the Android Market for free if you want to have a peek. I wonder what the other networks have customised their handsets with if any? We haven’t had much confirmation of the Pricing yet ( except Orange , who will be offering it free) but we’ll keep you posted! With all these operators stocking the desire, lets hope to see some competition price wise. Are you interested in purchasing a Desire?
