Samsung Galaxy Spica out on Rogers for $80 on contract
Rogers users have a new option in the stable in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Spica. Unfortunately those that do hop on board will be commiserating with the Motorola Backflip crowd running Android 1.5 in an Android 2.1 world. As we reported last month, there is a leaked Android 2.1 ROM for this device floating around out there already, so you can probably anticipate being brought up-to-date real soon. However, I will caution you that “real soon” doesn’t always mean what you think it means . OS version concerns aside this device is a bit of a study in contrasts as it has some nice features while definitely falling short in other areas, but at only $80 it is hard to complain too much. It also benefits from its close proximity to the Backflip release as this thing shines by comparison (This one comes with Google Apps!). The processor weighs in at 800 Mhz, making it one of the faster (on paper anyway) Android devices on the market. The capacitive 3.2 inch screen at 320

Motorola CLIQ XT hands-on
We know you've barely recovered from our Devour review , but Moto just threw another Blur-ified phone in our laps this afternoon - the CLIQ XT . We've been playing around with the Android 1.5-based, Flash Lite -supported, multitouch-capable handset for the last couple of hours -- but before we grace you with our first impressions, just a fair warning: we don't yet know the price of the new T-Mobile Android handset, though Motorola did promise us that it will hit shelves this month. With that said, hit the break for a quick rundown of our early thoughts. Gesture Search
Gesture Search lets you quickly find a contact, bookmark, application, or music track from hundreds or thousands of items by drawing English alphabet gestures on the touch screen. Gesture Search continuously updates search results as you add each letter and improves search quality by learning from your search history. Price: Free AndroidTapp.com Android App Review: Pros & Cons: Pros Innovative way to search Contacts, Apps, Music, and Bookmarks on your phone by drawing letters Cons Experimental app and only available for Android 2.0+ devices like DROID and Nexus One Only available in the U.S. currently Features: Gesture Search Android App is an experimental app from Google Labs that allows you to search Contacts, Apps, Music, and Bookmarks on your phone by drawing letters… Awesome! Google Gesture Search is only available on Android 2.0+ devices in and the U.S. currently as it uses English characters to recognize search queries. Usefulness: Gesture Search is both cool and convenient to search Android phone contents. With this addition you can type, talk and draw search queries on Android Phones. Tips for Using Google Gesture Search: I’ve found it works even faster if you toggle it in the Settings menu. The app then indexes the searchable content on your phone allowing for faster gesture searches and results display. Write more than one letter to narrow down search results. You can delete one letter written by swiping right to left (equivalent to backspace button) . Delete all written letters by swiping left to right . Frequently Used: User dependent. I would encourage placing an icon on the home screen to entice more usage. This feature should really be a core feature of the OS. AndroidTapp.com Rating (4.3 out of 5) Should you Download Gesture Search? Got an Android 2.0+ then Grab It!

Cliq XT Pamphlet Leaks on Eve of Release
We've yet to hear anything official from Motorola or T-Mobile in regards to the release of the Cliq XT. For a phone that's rumored to launch tomorrow, both the carrier and handset manufacturer have been super silent. To confirm that the phone is ready for release, I spoke with the manager at my local T-Mobile store. Sounds like it's ready to go as I was advised they've received both dummy, non-working displays as well as the floor model for demonstration. Engadget was recently passed some images of the brochure for the CLIQ XT showing how sales reps can effectively sell the handset. Details include talking about the web browser with Flash Lite, the 5 megapixel camera, and MOTOBLUR. The smart phone also features Flash Lite, multi-touch, and preloaded apps SHOUTcast, Midomi, GoTV, Last.fm, TuneWiki, and SoundHound. Look for the CLIQ XT to sneak out tomorrow for $129 on a 2-year agreement. Might We Suggest... T-Mobile-Branded Motorola Cliq XT Spied We're heading into the final days before Motorola and/or T-Mobile officially announced the Cliq XT. How do we know? Spy shots, of course. T-Mobile Makes Motorola CLIQ XT Elevator Pitch
So you’re a T-Mobile employee and you’re standing in an elevator with a customer for 60 seconds. You desperately want to sell them the Motorola CLIQ XT but aren’t exactly sure how to make the sale in that limited amount of time. No problem – that’s what training (and pamphlets) are for: The above is from a pamphlet provided to employees and leaked to Engadget . For the folks who can’t read fine print, allow me to help: Sell It in 60 Seconds The MOTOROLA CLIQ XT with MOTOBLUR is the thinnest Android phone at T-Mobile. The CLIQ XT gives you access to thousands of apps from Android Market, plus it has MOTOBLUR – a service that automatically syncs messages, emails, posts and pictures from your favorite accounts to one place – not into separate apps. MOTOBLUR also syncs, consolidates, and updates your work and play contacts – automatically in real time. So if your friend chanes a phone number on Facebook, the change will also be reflected in your contacts book. You can view a contact’s latest profile picture and status update at a glance, from the Happenings widget, your contacts book, or even when you get an incoming call. Of course, you can share your world as well – snap pics with the 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and post them to all your favorite sites, or update your status across Facebook, MySpace and Twitter with just one click Plus, CLIQ XT’s enhanced Google HTML browser and Adobe Flash Lite let you see more of the Web, while pinch-and-zoom and the front-touch navigation tool give you more control of it. So… are you sold? Not yet? No problem… allow me another minute of your time to reveal a wee-bit more of the pamphlet: How ’bout now? By the way I definitely agree with Mary Morgan at the moment.

Moto’s iDEN Opus One is the i1, will have MOTOBLUR
Remember the Opus One, the Android-powered iDEN handset from Motorola we scooped and then spec’d just before Christmas? Well apparently it’s going to be made official sometime in the next few weeks (hello, CTIA!) and will feature one added but obvious goodie: MOTOBLUR. Since we know most of you don’t have encyclopedic memories, here’s a bit of a refresher on what we’ve been told this phone is all about: 3.1″ hVGA 320×480 capacitive touchscreen display 3 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash Accelerometer Proximity sensor Wi-Fi 802.11b/g Bluetooth microSD card slot 2.5mm headset jack Home, Menu, Back, Speaker buttons are capacitive buttons with haptic feedback iDEN PTT & PTX Android LBS which is integrated into the iDEN GPS engine “Enterprise email” Plastic-molded housing with some rubberized texture finishes 58mm in width, 118mm in length 100g weight 512MB Flash / 256MB of RAM 64k and 128k iDEN SIM card support A-GPS Motorola dual-mic technology noise-canceling for noisy environments Flash Lite v3.1.x Some of the preloaded apps include: corporate email client with ActiveSync support, MOTONAV navigation app, barcode scanner, and document viewer. Obviously without being official it’s not possible to confirm carriers, but naturally Sprint’s Nextel and Boost are going to get on board while TELUS’s Mike is said to be getting it in Q3 . Read
