Verizon iPhone 4: Game Over for Droid Phones?
What are your thoughts on the inevitable release of the iPhone on Verizon Wireless? We still might be a year away from a release, but we have an article for you to read now, which suggests that a release could spell the end for Verizon’s Droid-branded smartphones. This report from Beatweek , suggests that Verizon are fighting a losing battle with their Droid phones after investing a lot of money into them, and believes that only an iPhone release on Big Red will turn their fortunes around. They quote a recent CNN study that 4 out of 5 Android users have no plans to buy another Android handset after their current one, which would be ‘game over’ according to them. However, I can’t really see this happening. The Motorola Droid X has been a huge success for Verizon, and I’m pretty sure the Droid 2 will exceed sales expectations as well. I don’t think that the introduction of the iPhone on Verizon will spell the end for Verizon’s Droid brand. Thanks to handsets like the Droid, Droid Incredible and Droid X, Verizon has now built up a strong following and I can definitely see a shared divide between Droid owners and iPhone owners on Verizon. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think that it is ‘game over’ for Droid phones once the iPhone is available on Verizon?

Groupon application hits Android, bringing daily deals of up to 90% off
Groupon is one of many services that are popping up lately that offer big daily discounts on goods and services from local businesses. As an example of what these deals contain, my wife and I have about 3 coupons sitting on our table for $40 worth of food and drink at local Minneapolis restaurants that were purchased for $20 each. It’s a good way for local businesses to generate new customers (and potentially repeat business), and a good way for consumers to discover new places they might enjoy on the cheap. Now, by and large these coupon applications have stayed away from standalone apps for Android (there are a few out there, of course). Groupon is hoping to buck this trend, however, as they announced yesterday the launch of their Android application, which will bring these deals right to your Android device. Groupon for Android allows Android users to purchase the deal of the day, access your purchased Groupon so you can easily redeem it by showing your phone at the local business, and find all nearby businesses. This is a 1.0 release that Groupon built for Android as a result of overwhelming requests from Android users. Because of the heavy demand, Groupon wanted to get out an application that worked well but didn’t have all of the features it wanted to include. But fear not, Groupon is already hard at work on the next version which will include forum access and a Groupon widget. Better yet, they want to hear your ideas to incorporate into future releases. Have an awesome idea? Head over to the Groublogpon blog and let them know about it. Don’t have any good ideas? Groupon is now available for free on the Android market for all Android 1.6+ devices, so head over to the market and download it to start saving today.
Motorola Droid 2 slides out of hiding in new photos and video
Apparently the Droid 2 finally got sick of its sibling getting all the attention and decided to pose for a few new candid shots of its own. Presumably everyone has seen the original Droid/Milestone and if so you are going to be pretty familiar with the look of the Droid 2. Looking first at the exterior the most notable changes are the keyboard — no more shiny gold d-pad — and the fact that the entire front of the device from the chin on up slides back to reveal the keyboard. Beyond that we have only some slight tweaking to the styling to differentiate this from the original. While that might not sound significant the keyboard was far and away the biggest complaint about the original device and this revision certainly offers at least a larger keyboard which has to be better, right? Gamers might be upset over the loss of the d-pad, but I know many people found reaching over it to type to be odd so at least some folks should be happy with the change. Moving to the inside of the Droid 2 we have a new 750MHz processor and internal memory boosted to 8GB. Again while that might not sound like a huge improvement the Droid has held up reasonably well against some of the recent “superphones” and a beefed up processor is just what the doctor ordered to bring it in line with those youngsters. Notably the Droid 2 is not picking up either the HDMI out of the Droid Shadow/Xtreme nor will it be one of the 2-4 Motorola phones launching with a front facing camera this year. At the moment the Droid 2 is running on Android 2.1 with the new more subtle version of MOTOBLUR tagging along. It’s possible that we’ll see 2.2 by launch, but unlikely as reports are that this could be coming in early July with Verizon employees getting a training session on both the Droid 2 and the Droid Shadow/Xtreme on June 22nd. So what are you thoughts on the new Droid? We’ve got powerhouse options dropping left and right this summer in the form of the HTC Evo , the Samsung Galaxy S , and the Motorola Droid Shadow/Xtreme to name a few, but the Droid 2 is bringing that keyboard that Android buyers seem to love and that might just be enough for it to carve out a nice little niche for itself. Rumored Droid 2 Specs: Android 2.1 (barring a last minute Froyo intervention) 3.7″ screen 750MHz OMAP processor Wi-Fi tethering 8GB internal 8GB SD card preinstalled Updated keyboard 5MP camera New version of MOTOBLUR New to Android?
