Google acquires reMail iPhone App

Google has recently acquired reMail from the AppStore and the removed it form the iPhones AppStore. Ha, take that Apple. One of the best apps for the iPhone could make its way to Android soon. Although this may end up being mashed together with the gmail app to enhance its functionality. Gabor Cselle, the founder, will join Google’s Gmail team in Mountain View as a product manager and has issuded the following statement: “You might be wondering what will happen with reMail’s product. Google and reMail have decided to discontinue reMail’s iPhone application, and we have removed it from the App Store. reMail is an application on your phone. If you already have reMail, it will continue to work. We’ll even provide support for you until the end of March, and we’ve enabled all paid reMail features for you: You can activate these by clicking “Restore Purchases” inside the app. reMail downloads email directly from your email provider to your phone, and your personal information, passwords, and email are never sent to or stored on our servers.” For those of you who are unfamiliar with this app, here is a video of it in action. Nintendo DS Like Android In The Making?

Android is making a strong showing at this years MWC. There has been a lot of different announcements about upcoming devices running our beloved OS. This for now is just a prototype by Texas Instruments pushing the OS even further than we imagined. Texas Instruments is hard at work making a processor that is capable of controlling three screens simultaneously. The device in this video demonstrates the power of this new processor. The bottom screen controls the top screen and the image can either be projected onto a screen through its integrated Pico Projector or output via HDMI onto a monitor. This is a huge leap forward and it opens the doors for an Android with Nintendo DS like capabilities. Click here to view the embedded video. Cliq Getting 2.1 In March?

Seems like it was just yesterday when we told everyone the Droid would be getting Android 2.1 in the next week or two. Now it’s the Cliq’s turn. As I mentioned yesterday, hopefully Motorola will update all their Android’s to 2.1 soon and it looks as though this is the case. The Devour should get this update as well since it is a MotoBlur device like the Cliq. March is looking like its going to be a big month for Android and Motorola. [via bgr ] )

Following Froyo is Gingerbread, next Android version

First there was Cupcake, then Donut, Éclair, then Froyo. And now hopes for “Gelatin” being the name of the next version of Android have been dashed, as Google’s “G” codename turns out to be “Gingerbread”. Google’s Brian Swetland and Android Linux kernel guru let loose the next codename while discussing kernel versions. Great, we now have the name of the next two builds, in the way of: “This week we’re finalizing our move to 2.6.32 for the Android “Froyo” release, and we’ll likely be on .33 or .34 for “Gingerbread”.” Thoughts for “H”? HTC Dragon, A6388 & other Android phones tipped in Dopod roadmap

A leaked Dopod roadmap has filled in some launch details for the HTC Dragon, as well as spilled the beans on a number of other smartphones headed to the Chinese market this year. The Dragon – a 3.6-inch WVGA HSDPA Android phone – is expected to arrive there in Q2 2010, and be shortly followed by the A6388, a cheaper 3.4-inch HVGA Android device. There’s also news of a 4.3-inch WVGA device, the Huashan, which seemingly started life as an Android smartphone but which is apparently being changed to Windows Mobile. That will drop mid-way through Q3 2010, and be followed in Q4 2010 by the 2.8-inch QVGA Songshan – and Android phone with a keyboard – and the Tianshan, a 3.2-inch QVGA Android phone shortly after. Philips V900 official for China Mobile

It’s been a long time since we heard talk of a Philips Android handset, but over in China the company have just announced the Philips V900. Headed initially to China Mobile, the V900 has a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, triband GSM/EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, and runs the OPhone Chinese Android build. There’s also a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera, mini-USB port and 3.5mm headphone jack, and the whole thing measures 115 x 62.4 x 13.2 mm. What remains to be seen is whether Philips have plans to bring the V900 – or a version of it – to US or European shores. If they do, it’ll need to throw in 3G. Magic Maze geolocation game demands eyes-on attention

If you’ve ever been looking for an excuse to walk into things, stumble around and generally put your life at risk, you could always try a quick game of Magic Maze for Android . devGuide’s new game combines physical GPS position with an on-screen labyrinth, which the player navigates by moving around their environment. The company recommends you play outside, and given the sharp blow we’ve just received to the face thanks to a sudden turn into a doorframe, we’d agree it’s the best plan of action. Your route has to take place within the on-screen game area – if you try to cheat the phone will know, and you’ll lose – but you also lose a life by stepping on any of the green squares. We’d like to have seen a little more in the way of real-world interaction, perhaps some augmented reality so that the game is overlaid onto the camera’s view of what’s physically ahead of you. Still, maybe we’ll get that in a later release. Magic Maze is available to download now, priced at £0.99 ($1.55). LEGO Mindstorms gets Android remote control [Video]

The Japanese PLEN robot – that used an Android smartphone as its remote – is great, but at $3,000 it’s a little too expensive for the casual hobbyist. Instead, how about using some more affordable LEGO Mindstorms kit ; that’s what the Enea Android team have done , taking advantage of the Mindstorms’ integrated Bluetooth to remotely control it from an HTC Hero. Movement is handled by physically tilting the phone, and the user can switch between guiding more than one robot. It’s not quite as straightforward as pairing the Mindstorms ‘bot with the Hero, however, since the Android 1.5 OS the smartphone is running doesn’t actually support the Bluetooth serial profile (SPP). Instead, the Hero gets a WiFi link to a nearby laptop, and the laptop bridges the connection via its own Bluetooth adapter. Still, Android 2.1 supports SPP, and so we can only hope an update to the app is in the works. There’s plenty of cheap LEGO Mindstorms kit on eBay , after all. Click here to view the embedded video.
