Few Details on Google’s Chrome App Store
Google is keeping plans for its Chrome App Store close to the vest for now. Sundar Pichai, the director of product management for Google, told reporters Tuesday afternoon at its Google I/O conference here in San Francisco that Google will be "announcing all the possibilities for the store at a later date." In response to reporters' questions, however, Pichai did say that, for now, the plan was to have the store launch with support just for Chrome and Chrome OS. Google is also in talks with other browser makers, he said. Developers will receive 70 percent of the revenue from applications, which will be delivered in both paid and free forms. Google will also reveal the details of its monetization strategy in the future. Prices sounds like they may be on par with the Android market, with the average at about $2.99 or $3.99. As for the Chrome OS, more details on that will be revealed "soon," Google executives said. Google is still on track to deliver Chrome OS, which is basically the Chrome browser surrounded by a minimal amount of code to get the browser online, by the end of the year.

Twitter’s Executives Answer Everybody’s Questions [LIVE]
At the final panel of the night for the Chirp Twitter conference, Twitter’s key executives are answering the audience’s questions. It’s a free-for-all of Q&A. The executives on stage: VP Product Jason Goldman, COO Dick Costolo, Director of Platform Ryan Sarver, CEO Evan Williams, and Co-Founder Biz Stone. Here are all of the audience questions and the answers from the Twitter executives: The Questions [LIVE] Q: Android App? A: – Ev: There is an Android app in the works Q: On identifying promoting tweets: is the current system enough? Does it also need a hashtag? A: – Dick: No, different color background for Promoted Tweets and the “Promoted by” text is enough. Q: Participating in the firehose? A: The team wants to get the firehose to as many people as possible; they are hiring more people to help ramp that up. - Ev: We want as much innovation and experimentation as possible. Q: Firehose and segmentation: Are we going to get geocode feeds in it? A: – Ryan: We already have a geocode hose, but most people don’t know about it. It specifically takes only geocoded tweets. Q: Is Twitter going to host rich meda like video, photos, etc? A: – Ev: There hasn’t been a decision yet. They like not hosting that data, but it has been a user experience problem. We think it could be a lot easier. - Ryan: We’re working on a Twitter API related to this. - Ev: We’re going to make the user interface easier related to rich media. We won’t discount the possibility of hosting. Q: Is Zuckerberg/Facebook copying us? Is Twitter copying them? A: – Jason: In general, Facebook focuses on what’s best for users when it builds new features, not what will kill other applications. The evolution of social media is that new things come up that displace what’s happening now. Thus, he’s less worried about Facebook and more focused on what could come from the rest of the development sphere. - Ev: It’s not always black and white — we’re all both competitors and partners depending on the situations. Q: What would you say to developers who are trying to allocate thier time between platforms? A: – Ev: Focus on what you like the most. Be driven by what you want to create, not who has the most users, etc. Q: What if new investments into 3rd party Twitter apps dry up because of Twitter’s recent moves? What if the uncertainty chills the finance hose? A: – Dick: There’s not more uncertainy, there’s more certainty. We’ve laid out what’s happening in the next few months, which should comfort investors. Q: What is the future of a Twitter app? What does it look like going forward? A: – Ryan: There are too many categories to say there is one specific theme. Audience-focused ones (like TweetDeck) have worked for power users, for example. Co-Tweet focused on business, and it also worked. Analytics is another. Q: What’s Twitter long-term international censorship strategy, particularly around China? A: Jason: We have no plans to operationalize in China. Interested in translating interface in Chinese. Q: As Twitter search relevance improves, how does a promoted tweet relate to a top tweet in search results? A: – Dick: There’s one promoted tweet at the top of the page, period. The decision of what to put there is based on resonance factors. As to if a top tweet should supercede a promoted tweet — they are going to explore that issue as they test out Promoted Tweets. Q: Why should someone work with you? A: – Ev: 1) Have you met us? 2) We’re in a sweet spot for a company — we’re less than 200 people, figured out a lot of shit out in the beginning (it was less fun in the beginning). We’re in a sweet spot where we have a small company where one person can make a big impact with things that can scale. Q: What’s the path to acquisition? A: – Jason: They’re all different situations. We basically merged with Summize (Twitter Search). - Ryan: Loren (Tweetie) built a great product as a one-man shop. - Jason: Summize and Loren were both outside of Silicon Valley. Q: What’s the path to the “Dictionary” promotion box on the homepage of Twitter.com? A: – Jason: It’s like the old Twitter Suggested Users List: we wanted to promoted apps; we’d like to have an algorithmic way, but couldn’t at the time. Now we do have one: Promoted Tweets. Q: Is there a way to feature kick-ass developers? A: – Ryan: We want to find better ways to highlight amazing apps and amazing developers. Dev.Twitter.com is one big piece of this. We also want to do smaller versions of Twitter.com Q: (From Mashable’s Jolie O’Dell!) How will Twitter give better guidance to developers in the immediate future, and in the long term? A: – Ryan: We want to do more town halls on a quarterly basis. We want to give certainty on the big projects every quarter. - Jason: On developer previews that we’ve done, the API is never afterthought. It’s part of the overall product design. We pre-announce the features on the dev list so that they have a chance to deal with the changes, at least before the users of Twitter.com. We rely on the API to build out features on our own. Q: What did you learn over the last couple of weeks? A: – Ryan: For me, it’s that we need to improve communication. We need to externally better, maybe even hiring people who will communicate to the community better. - Ev: Exactly right. This is a lesson we’ve learned time after time: if people don’t have visibility of decisions, the natural reaction is to think it’s nefarious in nature. Hopefully this conference has helped. Ever since then we all have been stalking the thread day and night hoping that our name will be pulled out the proverbial hat. Well it finally happened last night. The first winner was non other than our newly promoted Director of the community Simms22 . He is probably the most deserving person for the prize. Simms has been around since the beginning of AC helping almost every member that step foot in our community. He has spent countless hours hammering out problems and no matter how long it takes he usually gets the job done. He is one of the most knoweldgedlb people in our community and if you ever need help modding your phone he will surely step in to help. But Simms was only the first winner. Vincent threw in a curve ball announcing that there will be 3 more winners but, Simms would have the responsibility of choosing them. And early in the a.m., Simms chose the second winner. CMBarry1 , emerged victorious with one of the most sought after prizes, the beautiful Vaja Google Nexus One leather case. I’m sure CM is a happy camper now but don’t hang your head. All AC members are still live for the last 2 cases. So head over to the thread and throw your hat into the race. You never know, you could be the next winner.
