Android fans: “Apple, Thank you for the iPad!”

As you might have heard, today lots of early adopters are going to get their hands on the new Apple iPad. As Android fans we should not care about it but if you think about it, it is a great news for Android. A while back (late 2007), Apple released a new type of phone that marked the start of a new era with touch screen phones. Now the general consumer is using their phone to check email, look at web pages, install apps, etc. Prior to the Phone there was not that much going on in smart phones. Well, there are a few early attempts by Microsoft to fit Windows in mobile devices. Since the iPhone, each Android handset reviewed gets compared and looked at as potential "iPhone" killers in the mainstream media. Verizon clearly used the iPhone to promote the Droid with their iDon't campaign. As Android fans, it is easy for us to do the comparison to explain what our phone can do to non-techies. You can just start by saying "It is like an iPhone but it also can run apps in the background, you can remove the battery, it has a keyboard..." and so on. Thanks, again, to Apple, the same thing will happen with the iPad. There are few tablets already released and upcoming running Android: Asus , Kogan , Archos , Google , WePad (my favorite!) and all of them will benefit from the hype surrounding the iPad. Even if they might never sell in the same volume of units as Apple (like the iPhone), overall they will do well just because the iPad will do well. I know that I would never own (certainly not buy!) an iPad but I would certainly consider a WePad and if I have one and need to explain to non-techies, I would be able to start by: "It is like the Apple iPad but better because...". Do you agree? Will Apple's iPad help usher in an era of tablets? Will Android benefit? I would like to read your comments... Might We Suggest... Breaking News! Android Phones Get Their Screens Compared, Which is the Best ?

Android devices all have large, clear screens that are amazingly video-friendly. Sure, the Nexus One and Droid took it to the next level but for the most part, Android screens have been pretty awesome. So did you ever wonder which Android device had the best screen? We sure did. HDBlog.it attempts to answer that question by gathering 6 Android devices together for your viewing pleasure. Specifically, they've pitted the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, European HTC Hero, Motorola Droid, Samsung Galaxy, Nexus One, and Acer Liquid side by side in a video demo, so you can be the judge on who has the best screen. The video is available after the jump and by our eyes, the order goes: Nexus One, Droid, Liquid, Galaxy, Hero, & myTouch 3G. And though the Nexus One wins, there were some instances when the picture seemed too 'red'. Be sure to let us know which Android phone you think has the best screen in the comments! Watch the video after the jump! [via engadget ]  read more

Google just added the Near Me Now feature to their mobile searches – but only for Android and iPhone users. Now Google Mobile gives you popular image results during your search from your handset. Under the search box, you will now see some of the top popular corresponding images along with a link to “Browse Popular Images”. Following the link will open a categorized list of image searches and related images. Seems like one more minor improvement but when added with all the other small improvements the growth seems pretty vast. Any ideas as to what Google Mobile will introduce next? HTC says focus is on smartphones

HTC has announced that for now, their focus will be producing smartphones. Anthony Petts said that HTC was, "focusing their efforts on a new generation of mobile phones." and they were stopping work on tablets they have been designing. The focus is to be on Google's Android operation system and probably also Windows Mobile 7. While this might just be a strategy move on HTC's part concerning the tablets, the market certainly wouldn't be hurt if there were even more HTC smartphones.
