T-Mobile USA sees strong smartphone growth
After reporting their quarterly earnings this week, T-Mobile USA made it clear that smartphones are here to stay, seeing subscriptions triple year-on-year despite losing customers overall. Users with 3G-capable smartphones are now 19 percent of the entire T-Mobile USA subscriber base, with subscriptions over tripling to 6.5 million from 2.1 million in the Q2 2009. T-Mobile noted its most popular smartphones included Android devices like the MyTouch 3G and Nexus One , as well as the BlackBerry Bold and HTC HD2 , which use the BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile operating systems, respectively. During the quarter, T-Mobile upgraded its network to HSPA+, giving some T-Mobile users faster data than even Sprint's 4G networks. 15 cities, covering 85 million people, now have access to T-Mobile's HSPA+ upgrade. By the end of the year the company says it hopes to have HSPA+ available to 185 million Americans. Overall, the carrier saw a decline in subscriptions , due to a high rate of decline in the prepaid business. The company lost 199,000 prepaid subscribers while only gaining 106,000 contract customers. Permalink | Comments

Re: Iphone 4 battery question
While I don't have mine yet ( just shipped), it's important to remember that battery life is really subjective to the amount you use your phone. As other's have mentioned, it's not always the use when you're actively doing something (like browsing the web) but things that occur in the background can eat battery life too (Push email for example). I know that on my BlackBerry, I can normally get two days of average use out of a charge. But if I leave Google Maps open and running in the background, I notice that I'm consuming more batter than normal. I'm pretty sure that the GPS is running whenever Google Maps is running. I guess what I'm trying to say is figure out what the phone is doing even when you're not using it and see if there's anything you can do to reduce it. As other's have said, if you feel battery life is shorter than it should be, perhaps you should call Apple while it's under warranty.

Podcast 72: Dell Streak und Blackberry Torch
Diese Woche sprechen wir im Podcast über den Dell Streak, eine Mischung aus Smartphone und Tablet mit Android als Betriebssystem, und den Blackberry Torch, das erste Gerät mit Blackberry 6. Außerdem diskutieren wir eine Gartner-Studie, der zufolge Team-Arbeit in der Arbeitswelt bald der Vergangenheit angehört. Die Themen im Podcast Dell hat mit dem Streak ein interessantes neues Gerät vorgestellt, das mit seinem 5-Zoll-Display besser für Internet-Surfen und App-Nutzung taugen soll als typische Smartphones, sich aber dennoch in der Hosen- oder Hemdtasche verstauen lässt. Es dient auch als Telefon, so dass der Anwender nicht mehrere Geräte mit sich herumtragen braucht. In den USA wird der Streak noch nicht verkauft, dafür seit dieser Woche in Deutschland – das ist eigentlich eher unüblich, von Dell aber möglicherweise als Testlauf für die neue Geräteklasse gedacht. Das zweite interessante neue Mobilgerät in dieser Woche war der Blackberry Torch – nicht nur, weil er Touchscreen und die typische Blackberry-Tastatur bietet, sondern weil er das erste Smartphone mit dem neuen Betriebssystem Blackberry 6 ist. Mit diesem will Hersteller Research in Motion in den Bereichen auftrumpfen, in denen man sich im Vergleich mit iPhone und Android bislang nicht so gut schlug. So hat man viel an der Bedienung per Touchscreen gefeilt und einen neuen Browser spendiert, der wie die Browser der Konkurrenten als Rendering-Engine Webkit nutzt. Die weiteren Themen im Podcast: - Google stellt seinen einst als revolutionär angepriesenen Kommunikationsdienst Wave ein, weil er nicht genug Nutzer fand. - In den USA bekommt die Debatte um Netzneutralität neuen Schwung, da Google offenbar bereit ist, für eine Vorzugsbehandlung seiner Daten zu zahlen. - Die US-Justiz untersucht die Verträge, die Amazon und Apple mit großen Buchverlagen über E-Books abgeschlossen haben. Man geht davon aus, dass diese für Einheitspreise sorgen und denn Wettbewerb behindern. - Intel hat von der Handelsaufsicht einige strenge Auflagen auferlegt bekommen, die für mehr Wettbewerb bei Prozessoren, Grafikchips und Chipsätzen sorgen sollen. - IBM hat mit zEnterprise einen neuen Mainframe vorgestellt, der zu großen Teilen in Deutschland entwickelt wurde. Er ist nicht nur extrem leistungsfähig, sondern kann dank neuer Architektur auch Bladeserver verwalten und deren Ressourcen nach Bedarf verschiedenen Anwendungen zur Verfügung stellen. - In einem Zukunftsreport verkündet Gartner das Ende der Team-Arbeit. Schnelle Entwicklungen auf den Märkten würden zu sich schnell verändernden Strukturen in Unternehmen führen, in denen nicht mehr feste Teams zusammenarbeiten, sondern sich Spezialisten kurzzeitig für ein Projekt zusammenfinden. Ein neuer Begriff dafür ist bereits gefunden: Swarming.

I haven't seen a thread for those of us who ordered on 7/26 yet, so I thought I would start one. I placed my order for a 16 GB iPhone 4 on the afternoon of 7/26 in an AT&T store in Northwest Arkansas. The order is still on backorder now, but I'm noticing that some people who ordered on 7/23 are coming off of backorder today....so hopefully we're only a few more days away! I sold my 8 GB iPhone 3G last week, so I'm using an old beat-up Blackberry until my new iPhone arrives....which can't happen soon enough!!!
