Gowalla Gets An Early Native Android App. Prettier, More Social Than iPhone Version.

In November of last year, Gowalla finally extended its reach beyond its iPhone app with a version of its app that worked on the mobile web for Android (and the iPhone’s Safari browser). It was a pretty good web app but had some limitations, which founder Josh Williams accepted because his team was at work on a native app for Android as well. That wait is over. While it’s not yet in the Android Market, Gowalla has released a very early beta version of the native Android app to its most dedicated users that patrol the company’s Get Satisfaction page. Williams posted about the new app a few days ago, and noted that “ Technically, we are calling this beta release 0.1. We will release a more fully featured beta to the Marketplace before the end of the month .” Since it’s not in the Market yet, you can only get the app by visiting this static link — or by using your Android camera to scan one of the bar codes you can find in that Get Satisfaction thread. Note : To install the app, you have to have your device set up for the installation of “non-Market applications”. This site runs through how to do that , but basically you go to Menu -> Settings -> Applications, then check the “Unknown sources” checkbox. So how is the app compared to its iPhone brother? Well, surprisingly, in some ways I think it might already be better. While, as Williams, notes, it is currently missing the Trips feature , and it’s not doing any image caching, the 0.1 build of Gowalla for Android is slick and lightweight. As you’ll notice right away, the app has a distinctly different look because it has ditched the iPhone’s green hues for a cleaner, white look. I can’t tell you how many Gowalla users I’ve talked to that hate the green look of the iPhone app and would like a way to change it (I’m included in that list). More importantly, the Android version of Gowalla flips the features of the service so that your friend check-in stream is now the first tab. This makes the Android version more social right off the bat than the iPhone version, which buries that information in the last tab. Gowalla’s Android launch is timely as the SXSW conference is less than a month away. Last year, both Gowalla and rival Foursquare launched their iPhone apps at the conference, with Foursquare able to take an early lead over the past year. Foursquare now has apps for all the major mobile OSes except for Symbiam. Meanwhile, Gowalla is also close to launching a BlackBerry app . Game on. Check out some early screenshots below. [thanks Wes ]

PMSBuddy Helps (Men) Track That “Time Of The Month”

For men looking to have some sort of forewarning of their girlfriend or partner’s “time of the month,” PMSBuddy has got you covered. PMSbuddy’s iPhone app allows users to track the menstrual cycles of the women in their lives in the hope of notifying men and helping them cope with the dreaded PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and its effects. As ridiculous as it sounds to a woman, the service is currently being used by over 100,000 people worldwide, via an iPhone app , a website and Facebook widget. PMSBuddy is launching a new version of its iPhone app that will offer push notifications of upcoming PMS and the the ability to locate flower shops near you (via GPS). PMSBuddy will also be rolling out similar applications for Android and Blackberry phones. And PMSBuddy is expanding to other verticals. The startup will soon be launching Fertility Buddy, which allows women to track when they are ovulating to increase (or decrease) the likelihood of conception. Similar apps to PMSBuddy include MyMate and iAmAMan.

Shout for Android Offers One-Tap Texting

Shout could save your life. It's a voice-activated texting program for Android that listens to your message and recipient ("Text Joe 'It's herpes, it's not transmittable right now'") and shout repeats the message and, after you press the big "Yes" button, sends the text message. I could definitely imagine using this in a car or on a high-wire strung between two buildings over Cincinnati.

Opera Shows Off Opera Mobile For Android (Video)

We had a brief chat with Opera Software product analyst Phillip Grønvold here at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday. We had a conversation about the company's plans to submit an Opera Mini iPhone app up for App Store approval, of which we posted the video yesterday. Another thing we touched upon was the recently announced plans to provide handset manufacturers with a toolkit to get the company's Opera Mobile product preloaded on Android devices. Grønvold demoed the app running on Google's Nexus One phone, and we recorded the video of the app in action.

AccelGolf Scores $600K To Help Golfers Play Smarter

AccelGolf , a startup that looks to help golfers perfect their game with the help of mobile applications and an online analytics platform, has raised $600K in angel funding. The company was part of the TechStars class of 2009, which was held in Boston. AccelGolf offers native mobile applications for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry users. Using them is pretty straightforward: rather than jotting down your score for each hole on a piece of paper, AccelGolf’s apps allow you to also record both the club you used and the terrain type (tee, rough, green, etc.) you were hitting from. The whole process only takes a few seconds, so it shouldn’t slow down the speed of play much. CEO William Sulinski says that over time, this information can be used to help players identify what their weaknesses are, which clubs they should be using, and other key information. I’m not much of a golfer myself (it seems like it should be pretty intuitive to figure our your weaknesses), but Sulinski says that this data can be extremely valuable, and will be even more so once AccelGolf fleshes out its web-based analytics platform, which features various graphs and tables tracking your performance. The company currently has around 45,000 active users on its mobile applications, many of which are on BlackBerry. The apps are currently free, but AccelGolf plans to roll out a premium service in the near future. Sulinski also says that AccelGolf eventually plans to expand to provide analytics for other sports (though it sounds like that’s still a ways off). The company has also recently opened an API that allows other developers to tap into the platform. CrunchBase Information AccelGolf Information provided by CrunchBase
